Why it matters

The word "estate planning" makes it sound like something that belongs to wealthy people, or old people, or people who are not you. It sounds cold, legal, or final.

But when done right, estate planning is actually an act of profound love.

It’s letting your children know who will show up for them. It’s giving your partner details on how to access the accounts. It’s releasing your parents from worry and anxiety. It’s telling the people who depend on you: I thought of you. I made a plan. You will be okay.

It’s not just paperwork, it’s protection. And you deserve to walk through that process with someone who actually explains it to you, who helps you think through your real life, not a hypothetical one pulled from a legal textbook.

That is what the Empowered Legacy Series is built to do.

About the Instructor

My name is Kelly McMahon O'Brien. I am an estate planning attorney with over twenty years of experience and an LL.M. in taxation. I have spent my career helping clients organize, protect, and align their wealth and legacy with their values in an approachable way. I have sat across from clients at every stage of life. I have watched families navigate loss with a plan in place. I have watched families struggle without one

The hardest part of this work has never been the law. It has been watching people come into my office unprepared for the decisions they are about to make. Not because they are not smart enough, but because no one prepared them. I have also watched people get partway through and stop, not because they gave up, but because no one helped them over the hard parts.

The Empowered Legacy Series is what I wish every client experienced before their first appointment. It is the preparation, the honest conversations, and the guided decisions that I could never fit into a one-hour consultation but that I have always known matter most.

This is not about you having your paperwork in order. It is about protecting what and who matters.

FAQs

  • No. The Empowered Legacy Series is designed to prepare you for estate planning, whether you work with an attorney, are in the process of finding one, or are returning to update a plan you already have. What it is not is a substitute for legal advice specific to your situation.

  • No, and it is not meant to be. The Empowered Legacy Series is preparation, education, and guidance. It helps you make the decisions, have the conversations, and get organized before or alongside working with an attorney. Most clients find that completing the series first saves them significant time and money in legal fees.

  • Yes. While some content references Montana-specific laws and probate procedures, the vast majority of the course applies everywhere. The decision-making frameworks, the family conversations, the values work, and the organizational tools are universal. If you have family and assets, this is for you.

  • Possibly. If your will was drafted more than a few years ago, if your family has changed, if you have acquired new assets, or if you have never fully understood what your documents actually say, this course will be valuable. Most people discover significant gaps once they do this work.

  • Yes. Estate planning is about far more than asset distribution. It is about who makes medical decisions on your behalf, who raises your children, and what happens to your accounts and property when you are gone, regardless of how much or how little that involves. If people depend on you, you need a plan.

  • The Empowered Legacy Series is self-paced, so the honest answer is: as long as you need. Each of the nine modules is designed to be completed in a single sitting of 10 to 20 minutes. Most people move through the full course in about 30 days. Some take longer. A few move through it all in a weekend. The course is designed to fit your life, not the other way around. The only requirement is that you begin.

  • This course will help you identify those questions. For answers specific to your circumstances, a consultation with an estate planning attorney, including potentially with my office if you are located in Montana, is the appropriate next step.

  • The Empowered Legacy Series represents expert legal knowledge, years of professional experience, and intellectual property that is delivered in full at the moment of purchase. Because this is a digital product with immediate access, all sales are final after 7 days. whether or not you complete the workshop series. This policy reflects the nature and value of this work, not a limitation on my confidence in it.
